Who Am I?

I am a Landscape Designer who began Treefinders of Maryland (TFMD) in 1982. I passed the State of Maryland's exam and earned the title of Certified Professional Horticulturist. My original intent was to help the residents of Howard County not only design their landscapes to enhance the value of their property but to obtain for them hardy but uncommon trees shrubs and perennials that would help them distinguish their property from their neighbors. That and to design a plan that would yield year-round interest and beauty to their properties; unlike so many landscapes which peak out after only a few weeks of excitement.

Over the years I have worked with several distinguished landscape firms in Howard County such as AllSeasonsCare, H&H Landscaping, Choice Landscaping, LawnWorksPlus, Maryland Custom Landscaping and Grandfather's Garden Center.  I still work with several of these firms but I also provide my services to client's who contact me directly.

My Philosophy
        
  1. Your landscape should not only enhance the value of your home but be easy to maintain as well.
  2. I design with the intent that there will be something of interest to attract the viewer no matter what the season! No one grand burst in mid-Spring then blah the rest of the year!
  3. My 32+ years of experience has taught me what plants are not only able to withstand the climate of our area but also those which are less likely to be on Bambi and Thumper's list of favorite foods!
  4. I interview my clients so that my design will reflect their preferences and aspirations and not simply to usie up the inventory of any one Nursery or Garden Center. Even when I work with a garden center they understand that if what they have doesn't meet the needs of the client, I will obtain the appropriate stock from the many wholesale nurseries and growers in the area.
  5. I try to obtain the bulk of the plantings from local growers. If it grows here it will be hardy!

  6. I worked for Uncle Sam in an unrelated capacity and retired with a very nice pension. I'm under no monetary pressure to sell you something if its not needed or appropriate for your landscape.  I do this because I really enjoy what I do!

  • Help the client to select the correct plant for the site intended, especially when a design is not necessary
  • Sales of Plant and related materials

  • Delivery of above materials directly to the property where they will be installed

  • For those that prefer to do their own planting I provide installation instructions both in writing and on-site by demonstrating how-to-do it techniques.
  • Advice on other landscape materials to be used. For example: if Deer become a problem, I can recommend deer repellents I have used with success.
  • Labor. I can provide labor through either the nurseries/landscapers I work with, or I can assist the landscaper hired by the client, especially in terms of where each plant is to be installed and installation suggestions to help assure plant survival and success
  • General and Specific horticultural information. Example: You note disease, or insect infestation and need to know what to do to end it.
